Stairway in our Community

Well known for its leadership and teambuilding activities, the Stairway Consultancy based in Bourne End, took to the field (and river) at the Rotary Cookham Regatta recently.

Sarah Cook, Stairway’s Managing Director, threw down the gauntlet and accepted the ‘Cookham Challenge’, a series of events designed to test the skills of the most enthusiastic and committed  competitors.  And help raise money for charity.

Despite facing formidable opposition and a minor injury, the team completed five gruelling events to win the bronze. Stairway did particularly well in the volleyball and funny walk but stood little chance against the sheer weight of their opponents in the tug of war. Despite unusual navigation, they won their canoe-cats event by a fantastic five lengths, thanks to determined and impressive synchronised paddling.

This year was the second occasion the Stairway team included Dragon Boat racing as part of their challenge. But even following extensive and dedicated training, victory was snatched away in the final stretch.  Although the last moments were undoubtedly exciting for the spectators it became clear that the team were once again unlucky as they were hindered by the rumour of a flock of low flying geese and the wake of a passing boat.

Whatever the outcome, one thing was absolutely clear. Everyone had a fantastic day out and is determined to accept the challenge and a gold next year.

Stairway supports Rayners Special Educational Trust for Deaf and Autistic Children

On 18 June Stairway helped organise a Riverside Charity Walk in aid of Rayners Special Educational Trust for Deaf and Autistic Children. The photo shows some of the walking team stopping for refreshments during a gap in the rain at Cooking Reach Sailing Club.

Charity WalkThe walk started in Marlow and followed the Thames' path on the Bucks' river bank for 6 miles to Cookham. There was an option to return by train to Marlow or, for those more hardy walkers, to continue the return trip on the Berkshire side of the river, making 12 miles in total. The walk included a ploughman’s lunch supplied by Stairway at Cookham Reach Sailing Club and a quiz with a grand prize. In spite of the bad weather the walk raised over £1,000 for this worthwhile cause and a fun day was had by all.

Stairway aids Leukaemia, Saville Garden, Windsor Great Park

Saville Gardens was the venue for a sponsored walk by more than 50 members of the Stairway team, family and friends. Their objective was to help raise £1000 for the Anthony Nolan Trust, which helps save the lives of people with Leukaemia.

Late summer sunshine and temperatures around 20 degrees made Virginia Water a wonderful setting for the walk. The outside perimeter of approximately 5 miles encloses part of what used to be the largest man-made body of water in the British Isles. The woodlands surrounding the lake have been continuously planted since the middle of the eighteenth century.  Visitors can still admire, on the south bank, the ornamental cascade from the 18th century and a ‘Roman temple’ built from columns and lintels brought from the ancient city of Leptis Magna in the early 19th century. One of the area's more recent additions, and particularly popular with the children, is a towering 100-foot high Totem Pole, a gift from the government of British Columbia.

Lunch was provided in the Saville Garden restaurant where everyone could rebuild their energies before competing in various often hilarious activities. Rounders was particular popular and gave a good insight to peoples’ competitive nature. A great day out and a terrific result.

We are delighted to have reached our goal and thank participants and their friends for their contribution.
